Cat 6A UTP garnered a lot of attention when it first came on the scene in 2005, but its popularity has been slow to rise due to the fact that its 10 Gb/s capacity exceeds the requirements of most LAN applications. However, times are changing! Data rates continue to rise, more devices than ever are being connected, and new/emerging applications are requiring higher performance at faster speeds.
In a typical LAN today, bandwidth-intensive applications that require speeds beyond the 100 (or even 1000) Mb/s are on the increase. Cat 5e and Cat 6 networks are exhausted trying to transmit medical images, high def video, surveillance video, e.g. A typical medical image totaling 9000 MB takes about 1 minute to download over a 1000 Mb/s network, but that same image is available in only seven seconds over a 10 Gb/s network. What a difference that could make in an emergency!
There are also many other emerging applications that will perform optimally over Cat 6A, including: Next-Generation WiFi, PoE (4-pair), and HDBaseT to name only a few. Our industry standards bodies are definitely taking notice, and beginning to recommend Cat 6A cabling for all new installations in data centers, healthcare facilities, and educational facilities. TIA is also in the process of drafting its 4th revision of ANSI/TIA 568 (cabling standards for commercial buildings). As it stands right now, the current draft recommends Cat 6A for any installation and that is not expected to change from now until publication in 2016.
